One of my biggest passions in life is being an Everman Bulldog. After receiving a degree in Mathematics from Abilene Christian University, I have served Everman ISD for seventeen years in various roles as a teacher, coach, and district math coordinator, and after only my first year, I fell in love with the school and community. This year I begin my dream job for Everman as the academic advisor to athletes. This job combines all my passions: sports, educating students, community outreach, and providing students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds with an opportunity to graduate and pursue any route they choose in life.
As academic advisor, I will work with all athletes from 7th graders to seniors in high school, regardless of their desire or ability to play sports at the next level. I want success for everyone, and that looks different for every student athlete. Some aspects of this assignment will include class tutorials and SAT/ACT test prep after practice at the times when student-athletes are available. I will also be responsible for NCAA/NAIA eligibility registration, course selection, GPA requirements, and core class requirements that set student-athletes up for future success.
Each role I have served in this district has lead me to the experience needed to work collaboratively with the athletic director, campus principals, coaches, student athletes, parents, and the community. Being a student-athlete is a unique experience. Through this assignment, I will provide the opportunities that have been missing for student-athletes in higher education. My vision for my career is to create equity for college access and success to all student-athletes. To quote Dr. Layne, “A high school diploma can change a life, a college degree can transform a life.” As Academic Advisor, I will not only change lives, but also give students the opportunity to transform their lives through higher education.
